At 1.30am the village is a blaze of lights from street lights, Hubbards, the College and security lights on homes. 20 years ago you could see the night sky nearly every night it is now a rare experience. Should Otley Green group tackle light pollution as an issue? Should we conduct an online survey?

Please let Tony Barrett know what you think.

Possible solutions

  • Persuade local business to reduce glare from their lighting and consider whether they really need lights on all night, could they be connected to movement sensors
  • Reduce the number of street lights in Otley, switch them off at midnight?
  • Persuade people to install lower wattage security lights and connect them to motion sensors

Some facts about light pollution

  • The cost A third of street lighting goes upwards wasting £120M a year.
  • If a 10th of houses have security lighting and it is left on for 1 hour a night this costs £40M a year more than low wattage solutions. The equivalent cost for commercial premises costs £800m a year!!

That's a lot of CO2 Reducing street lighting Some communities have arranged to have street lights switched of late at night or the number of lights reduced.
